In the third and final episode, we look into role of content moderation on Facebook, among other things. “It is an enormous challenge to keep people safe on a platform used by nearly 2 billion every month, posting and commenting in more than 80 languages in every corner of the globe,” says Facebook. We look into what online hate speech can lead to in real life. Who actually determines what can appear on Facebook? Who determines the line between free speech and hate speech?
In Oxford, we talk to Carlo Schwarz, among others, who published a notable study in Germany. Regardless of the size of the city or town, regardless of average income or level of education, regardless of a left- or right-leaning society, one thing remained constant: wherever Facebook usage was higher than average, there were proportionally more attacks on refugees In London, we discuss the striking results of this study with Jamie Bartlett, journalist, tech blogger and author of The People Vs Tech: How the Internet is Killing Democracy (and How We Save It) (2018).
In Barcelona, Facebook invites us to have a look at a content moderation center. We ask Sarah T. Roberts about what we learn. Roberts is an Assistant Professor at UCLA (University of California in Los Angeles - Department of Information Studies) and author of the soon-to-be-published book Behind the Screen: Content Moderation in the Shadows of Social Media (June 2019).
Next to last, we have Evgeny Morozov (To Save Everything, Click Here (2013)). Morozov is one of the most important thinkers of our time, who singlehandedly took the discussion about the Internet and technology to a higher level.
Finally, together with Andrew Keen (How to Fix the Future: Staying Human in the Digital Age (2018)), we look at the future of Facebook. And that of all of us.
