Big Art for Little People

Eleven artist were given a refreshing assignment: Create a one to three minute long film for viewers of two years and up. The result is an ‘’audio-visual picture book” which deserves a place in the world of both children and art.

Marbles rolling against a wall, kitchen utensils playing together rhythmically, balls bouncing against an opening bridge, a potato being peeled away to nothing. The films have a recognizable starting point and from there explore all corners of the imagination, to end in a subtle plot.

1. Sally (2´14”)
Rolling marbles do as they like. Trapped in a space in which gravity operates differently, the marbles move along walls and the ceiling.

2. Mi Cocina (2´51”)
What does our kitchen do when we’re not paying attention? Nothing? Or does it enjoy a little dance?

3. Me yours and you mine (1´54”)
Two friends look at each other and bring together their foreheads. More is exchanged than mere glances.

4. The world according to a rabbit cage (2´27”)
Two girls are playing in a dull, empty car park. The light from their light saber is suspended in space. One girl is “silhouetted” by the other to the beat of music. Together, they create a forest of light!

5. Bouncing balls (2´20”)
Colored balls on the road don’t stay put. A bridge is used, playfully, for something it was not intended, as if the bridge keepers’ imagination has run off with him.

6. On the kitchen table (2´)
There is a still life on the kitchen table which comes to life and gives rise to a new world.

7. Potato (2´15”)
The edge of a table and two hairy arms. One hand takes a potato, the other starts peeling.

8. 1234 (3´)
In the film 1234 the camera has been placed on a seemingly ordinary spot in a park. As time passes, walkers, cyclists, dogs and runners pass by. A play between the editor’s rhythm and music leads to a game of movement and light. In the mean time, it deals with questions such as: What is fast and what is slow, what is close by and what is far away?

9. Big stitches (3´)
In a dark room, behind a hermetically sealed metal door, a pregnant woman is sewing together large pieces of fabric. A gust of wind takes on the shape of a storm.

10. Things (2´15”)
A tea pot, a wooden shoe, a football, a blender, a melon, a toy horse, a guitar, a police car, a bottle, a kettle, pencils, a bell pepper, a straw hat. All these things are stacked together into a chaotic pile in which order, sequence and balance are quite precarious and no object fits into the wrong place.

11. Behind the cabinet (3´11”)
The film is a journey through a forest as it takes on different shapes. In the forest, there’s a little house, in the house there’s a cabinet, in the cabinet is the same forest. It’s like being in a dream in which you’re not moving forward. The film has been made with a virtual camera, by moving still photographs. This creates a mesmerizing show-box with a magical forest you can float through.
