Erik Kessels (1966) is co-founder of the unconventional advertising agency KesselsKramer, graphic designer, curator but moreover he is a passionate photo collector, which he exhibits in books.

Kessels is a rebbellious spectator, who won’t settle for a simple interpretation. He always sees more. In Kessels’ Eye we look through his eyes and see new perspectives in ordinary images.

Martin Parr (Magnum Photographer) on Erik Kessels: ‘We are surrounded by images that are propaganda –with the main purpose to sell us something. Even a family album is a form of propaganda because people take pictures trying to make the family album look like it’s the perfect family. We have to counter the propaganda we are surrounded by.’

How should we determine what is important among the seemingly endless stream of images that bombard us every day? Kessels edits, combines and brings stories to the surface that others may have missed. To Kessels it is essential to keep looking and question what we see. ‘Looking is more than just consuming’, says Kessels. ‘People let images float past, but fail to really see them.’
