Duration: 3x 50' Director: Annette Bakker Producer: The JAM department and NCRV Television sales contact NPO Sales | “Grow up, my dear girl. Grow up into a free and emancipated person. You are a newborn, as are all of us at this time. You were swept along by life. We ourselves can hardly recognize the world. We will have to learn to walk again. Let us learn together.” This year on November 9, twenty years will have passed since the Berlin Wall came tumbling down. We meet four youths that were born in East Germany on the day the Berlin Wall fell. They learned to walk as free and emancipated people, but were their parents able to keep up? In this three-part series we join these youths in the months running up tp their 20th birthday. An important milestone for all of them, as they are about to make major decisions: going to college, starting a job, building a life of their own. For one of them, the history of the Wall is part of these decisions, while another hardly considers history of importance at this time in his life. However, consciously or subconsciously, all of them will have to shake off the yoke of ‘Ossies’. Without exceptions, the GDR determined the lives of their parents. In some cases, the Wall literally separated family members from each. |
